Del Sur Kennel Club, in conjunction with five other local AKC dog clubs and the American Kennel Club, donated three disaster relief trailers to the County of San Diego Department of Animal Services on Saturday, February 21, 2015.
The presentation was made during the Silver Bay Kennel Club’s show at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. Each disaster supply trailer comes equipped with 65 crates, fans, lighting and generators, bowls, collars, leashes, kitty litter, cleaning supplies, microchips and a microchip scanner. The supplies allow volunteers to set up a small animal shelter inside an evacuation center to house pets until the danger has passed and then easily dismantle it.
UPDATE: June 24, 2016
In San Diego, with numerous small animals being evacuated due to the Border Fire, Animal Services has deployed one of their donated AKC Pet Disaster Relief Trailers to a receiving area near the fire. Having the supplies nearby means that the Department does not have to bring sheltering supplies from their nearest facility which is an hour away. The supplies will be used for people that have evacuated without their own crates or cages, giving the community and the first responders peace of mind that the animals will be able to be properly cared for at this time of need.
